WELCOME TO YEAR 6

Our topic this term is ‘The Egyptians.’  We will be finding out where Egypt is using globes and maps, as well as, finding surrounding seas and countries.  The children will identify the major cities in Egypt (including the capital Cairo, Aswan and Luxor) and they will investigate the River Nile.  Links to Literacy will be made through writing persuasive holiday brochure pages, persuading tourists to visit Egypt.  In addition to this, the children will write a range of other genres such as, a discursive argument, to discuss the controversial issue of building the Aswan Dam, as well as, a newspaper report about the flooding of the River Nile and the affects this has on the lives of Egyptians.  The new term will be hit off with a comparison of the first ever version of Cinderella (The Egyptian Cinderella), with the modern Disney version and the children will write their own fairy tales, following a similar style.

Year 6 will continue to have one PE session per week at Westleigh High School on Tuesdays, this will be badminton initially.  There will also be football and rugby tournaments held, as well as an opportunity for six children to take part in a cross country at Leigh Sports Village.  In school, the children will be learning the dance moves to ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ by The Bangles, in preparation for our class assembly.  Music with Miss Seddon will include Egyptian themed songs and in RE lessons the children will study the Bible, looking at stories such as ‘Joseph.’

After half term Year 6 will prepare for the whole school fashion show by researching Egyptian clothing, as well as designing and making their own.  There will also be many more cross-curricular writing opportunities.

Science this half term will focus on forces and will involve lots of practical investigations.  After the half term break the Science focus will be ‘Sight and Light.’

Numeracy will continue to be streamed across the school and will focus on the individual needs of the groups, in relation to their personal Assertive Mentoring Targets.

Miss Jones looks forward to seeing all parents/carers on Monday 27th February for the second Assertive Mentoring parent consultation day.

…and of course we are all looking forward to our forthcoming trip to Hinning House at the end of this term!
